‘I owe NPP and Ghana a duty to give back’ – Bawumia

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has assured supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that he will never take actions that could destabilise the party.

Addressing thousands of supporters at the NPP headquarters in Accra after filing his nomination papers to contest the flagbearer slot, he said his focus was on building unity to secure victory in the 2028 general election.

“Our true opponent is not within. Our true opponent is out there,” Dr. Bawumia declared, urging aspirants to view the flagbearership contest as an internal process and avoid actions that could divide the party. “We need unity to win and I promise you that, just as you have known me to be, I would not do anything to bring division or conflict within the party. If there would be anyone to create problems in the NPP, it won’t be Dr. Bawumia,” he stressed.

The former Vice President also reflected on his political journey, describing his decision to enter politics as a duty to both the NPP and the nation. He recalled leaving high-profile roles at the Bank of Ghana and the African Development Bank to serve the party, and his willingness to risk his reputation in defence of the NPP’s electoral fortunes.

“All my life, this country and this party have given me so much,” he said. “I feel an overwhelming sense of duty to give back. That is why I didn’t hesitate to leave my job at the Bank of Ghana to assist the NPP’s quest for power in 2008. That is why I did not hesitate to leave my job at the African Development Bank to help the NPP in 2012. That is why I didn’t hesitate to take the box at the Supreme Court as the star witness in 2013 to fight for the NPP.”

He added: “That is why I have never hesitated to defend this party even at the risk of mockery by our opponents. That is why I did not hesitate to concede the 2024 elections to preserve the nation’s peace. You can be sure that with Mahamudu Bawumia as flagbearer, I shall not hesitate to put my all on the line for the NPP and for Ghana as I have done before.”

Dr. Bawumia called on party members to join him in rebuilding and repositioning the NPP to “deliver for Ghanaians from 2028.” He pledged that his vision would focus on expanding the economy, creating jobs and ensuring a stronger future for the country.

“I implore you to join me on this journey to rebuild our party and reposition this great tradition to deliver for Ghanaians from 2028. Let us win and let us win together. Let us win with Bawumia,” he said.
