Jomoro NDC constituency in free-for-all

The new and old executive members of the Jomoro Constituency executive of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) last week shocked the entire district when they engaged in a brawl over the removal of the District Chief Executive (DCE) from office.

But for the timely intervention of the police officers present, the situation would have turned bloody as the party’s Constituency Chairman, Mr Gideon Koniba, and one former executive member, Mr Okalo (aka Educated-Fisherman) began  exchanging blows.

Brawl

Speaking to the Daily Graphic last Friday, Mr Koniba confirmed the brawl and accused the former constituency communication officer of  starting the scuffle.

According to Mr Koniba, on his arrival at the assembly grounds, where a group of NDC supporters had embarked on a demonstration demanding the removal of the DCE, Mr Sylvester Nuomah Daddieh, he urged them to calm down and explained to the group that the removal of the DCE was necessary but they must follow due  process.

“Suddenly, the former executive member, Mr Okalo, who was not comfortable with my presence, pounced on me.

Some onlookers also joined in before the police came in to separate us,’’ he said.

Loggerheads

Mr Koniba said the party’s major problem in the district was the resolve by the DCE to not work with the new executive members.

According to him, the DCE still goes round and discusses party issues with the old executive.

“How can we work in a constituency, with pending elections next year, where the district chief executive, who is the representative of the President, does not talk to the Member of Parliament, the executive members of the party and maintains a strong autocratic posture,” he stated.

He said it was important to note that “many of the executive members have visited the DCE  to discuss issues with him and they were met with serious verbal assaults”.

The constituency chairman said the demonstration and the fight was not necessary, but came about due to the DCE’s posture.

Loggerheads

When contacted, the DCE, Mr Sylvester Nuomah Daddieh, confirmed that there was a problem in the constituency, which must be resolved.

He said the demonstration held last Monday seeking his removal was baseless but confirmed that the relationship between him and the MP and constituency executive members was not the best.

“Some of the problems are party issues and we cannot go out and be discussing them as if we are the only party with problems. It is important to know how and when to discuss issues, but the executive would not listen,” he lamented.
