MMDCEs in W/R call for action on GetFund projects

Metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives in all the 22 districts in the Western Region have deplored the  delays in the completion of GETFund-funded school projects scattered all over the region, thereby denying children access to quality education.

The chief executives said the situation was creating a lot of problems, since the assemblies had to overrun their budgets to construct improvised structures to ease the c  of the children.

This was contained in a communiqué read after a two-day end-of-year review meeting by metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives to discuss the state of the region and how to improve performance.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Aowin, Mr Oscar Ofori Larbi, who read it on behalf of his colleagues, said the DCEs had observed that many six-classroom blocks for junior high schools, additional classrooms for senior high schools and dormitories had not been completed.

DCEs worried

The DCEs said the situation had resulted in the crowded scenes at the classrooms at the basic and senior high schools, which did not create the perfect environment for academic work.

They said they appreciated the government’s efforts to provide infrastructure for schools in the region.

“We are, however, worried about the existence of a large number of uncompleted or abandoned school blocks scattered all over the region, thereby denying children access to quality education as envisioned by the President,” they said.

The DCEs attributed the situation to the non-payment of contractors by the GETFund Secretariat to enable them to continue the projects.

The situation, they said, had made things difficult for the MMDCEs in the region and that something must be done about it.

“We renew our commitment as operatives at the district level to work hard to ensure that in collaboration with the GETFund through the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) a solution is found to the challenges.”

Environment

On the environment, they said they were further disturbed by the unacceptable degradation of the forest and the pollution of all the water bodies in the region.
