NCCE educates Bobikuma residents on governance

The Agona West Municipal Department of the National Commission for Civic Education has held a day’s community durbar at Upper Bobikuma to educate the people on the local government system.

The event provided the residents with a platform to better understand the roles of assembly members and the district assembly so that they would always demand accountability from them.

It was preceded by a focus group discussion which afforded the residents the opportunity to deliberate on what they knew about the local government system and what could be done to enhance the decentralisation system.

Director

Addressing the gathering, the Municipal Director of the NCCE, Mr Sekyi Sam, bemoaned the culture whereby the people were only interested in voting and not how they would be governed particularly at the local level.

He said the people at the local level needed to be actively involved in local administration to keep the office holders on their toes in the governance process.

He added that the durbar was therefore very necessary as it would make the residents well informed to enable them to play their respective roles to support the development of their communities.

He advised district assembly and Unit Committee members to regularly meet the communities and report on their development needs to the district assembly for them to be addressed.

APRM

The General Secretary of the District Oversight Committee of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), Mr Alhassan Abu, called on assembly members to be in constant touch with the people in their electoral areas so as to dialogue on issues pertaining to the area.

He urged the people to support the municipal assembly in its quest to spread development throughout the municipality.
