Members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Upper West Akyem in the Eastern region have registered their disapproval over the dismissal of their District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Derek Ohene Asifo.

President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday appointed some eight new DCEs and removed seven including that of Upper West Akyem from office.

Led by the NDC constituency executives, the members who were not happy with the dismissal organised a press conference on Thursday at Asamankese to register their disapproval.

Graphic Online’s Eastern Regional Correspondent George Folley who was at the press conference reported that the youth locked up the constituency party office after the press conference and threatened not to re-open it until the President re-instates Mr Asifo.

According to our correspondent, the youth destroyed some posters of President Mahama at the party office and those pasted on a party vehicle.

Mr Asifo contested the recent NDC Parliamentary primaries but lost to the incumbent Member of Parliament, Mr Joseph Sam Amankwanor.

There have been simmering tensions between Mr Asifo and Mr Amankwanor and according to some of the party members, Mr Amankwanor threatened to show Mr Asifo “where power places” and hence they suspect he was behind the dismissal of the DCE.

Two days ago the constituency executives said they wanted Mr Amankwanor changed as their parliamentary candidate and accused him of holding dual citizenship. Ghana’s laws bar a person with dual nationality from running for public office.

The constituency executives sent a petition to the party demanding the leadership set in motion processes to determine the true nationality of the MP.
