Odike lauds Prez for reviving Komenda Sugar Factory

The flag bearer of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Mr Akwasi Addai Odike, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for making sure the Komenda Sugar Factory is in place first before thinking of raw materials to feed the factory.

The policy of “Factory First”, to him, is in line with the UPP’s industrial policy to help redeem Ghana from what he calls “the bondage of servitude”.

His commendation comes after the President had cut the tape to officially inaugurate the Komenda Sugar Factory in the Central Region.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, Mr Odike said in a more democratic environment, the UPP would give thumbs up to what was commendable, irrespective of which political party was initiating it the same way it would condemn what was unpleasant.

He said the stance taken by some opposition leaders on the Komenda Sugar Factory was misleading.

Malaysia comparison

Currently, he said, Ghana had entered into what he called the ‘machine age’, saying it was necessary to add value to whatever would help the country to create wealth for development.

He compared Ghana to Malaysia, saying that some time ago the country was at par with Malaysia and that it only took pragmatic efforts by the Malaysian government to get to where that country was.

He said although President Mahama had demonstrated the resolve to use technology to build the Ghanaian economy, citing the Komenda Sugar Factory, the UPP could do better when Ghanaians gave it the mandate to govern.

UPP’s industrial policy

He said the UPP had worked out a number of development policies to make sure that Ghana moved forward.

The flag bearer said Ghana was endowed with uncountable raw materials and it would be sharp on the part of the leaders of the country to think of getting machines and factories in place where raw materials could be turned into products.

That, he said, was the vision of the UPP, adding that should Ghanaians vote for the UPP in the upcoming November elections, Ghana would see transformation.

He mentioned what he had developed as the “5Ms”, saying they remained pillars in the environment of industry for a developing country such as Ghana.

He mentioned the 5Ms as Materials, Machinery, Management, Money and Men, explaining that Ghana already had raw materials to change the living conditions of the people and also the men to work to that effect but bemoaned the lack of machines, proper management and the money to excel in that regard.
