Mr Kojo Bonsu - KMA boss

Royal plea fails to get presiding member

Not even the royal intervention of the Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Ampem, for the opposing sides in the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Presiding Member (PM) election to reverse curses and counter-curses could result in the election of a Presiding Member for the metropolis.

At Wednesday’s polls, both Nana Kofi Senya, an elected member for Suame Electoral Area, and his contender, Baffuor Adjei Kesse Adumhene IV, a government appointee, each had 67 votes.

A third stalemate

In the first election, Baffuor Adjei Kesse had 68 while Nana Kofi Senya polled 65 but in the second ballot, Baffuor Kesse stretched to 74 votes with Nana Senya managing with 57.

The two sides used bottles of Aromatic Schnapps and a couple of white eggs for the curses.

After the two elections in November last year could not elect a presiding member for the 136-member assembly, some members who believed that the assembly members were elected on the ticket of the (NPP) New Patriotic Party advocated the election of an NPP-biased PM, Nana Kofi Senya.

The first group which supports Nana Kofi Senya invoked the initial curses on any elected assembly member who would vote against its preferred candidate. They urged the gods, Antoa Nyama, Akonodi and Anyanta, not to spare Nana Kofi Senya and his immediate family members if he dared step down for his competitor.

They also asked the gods to slay assembly members who would be at the voting venue but would abstain from the voting. They also said those who would try to appease the gods and overturn the curses had been added to the curse.

A second group, purported to support Baffuor Kesse, later invoked the curses of the same three gods against those who invoked the curses, a situation which attracted the attention of the Asantehemaa.

Calls on the first team to help reverse their curse proved futile. Therefore, together with the second team, the elders of the Asantehemaa reversed the curse through some traditional rituals.

Chief Director

The Chief Director of the KMA, Mr Michael Ataogye, commended the traditional leaders for their timely intervention which has paved the way for the elections to take place.
