Tamale Court places injunction on NDC regional elections

The Tamale High Court has placed an injunction on the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to deter it from conducting elections for the positions of secretary and treasurer in the upcoming Northern Regional congress of the party in Tamale next Saturday.

According to the plaintiffs, Mohammed Aliu and Issahaku Wumbei Zakaria, the vetting committee was biased in its decision to disqualify them from contesting the positions of regional secretary and treasurer respectively.

The plaintiffs accused the General Secretary of the NDC, Mr Aseidu Nketia, who chaired the vetting process in Tamale last weekend, of deliberately disqualifying them in favour of his preferred candidate.

They further indicted the party for holding the vetting process at the offices of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council, thus intimidating them, the aspirants, with the heavy security presence.

Later in an interview, Mr Aliu indicated that, “No amount of persuasion would convince me to drop this case until I secure a stake on the ballot paper for the regional congress”.

During the court hearing, some sympathisers of the plaintiffs, who had gathered on the court premises held placards, some of which read, “General mosquito is biased”;  “Respect the delegates”;  and “We want justice”.

When the Daily Graphic contacted the incumbent regional secretary of the party, Alhaji Umar Alhassan, he said the party had not received any such injunction from the court.

“And to the best of my knowledge, everything is on course for the holding of a successful regional congress on Saturday for all the positions advertised,” he stated.
