West Mamprusi rejects President's nominee

Members of the West Mamprusi District in the Northern Region have voted to reject outright the President's nominee, Mr Alidu Iddrisu Zakari, for the position of District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area.

The nominee, who is also a former Member of Parliament (MP) for the Walewale constituency, failed to secure the two-thirds of the votes of the assembly members required and therefore, had no chance of a second round of voting for possible confirmation.

Mr Zakaria had only 11 assembly members out of the 41 to endorse his nomination, while 31 voted against him. The confirmation voting was held at Walawale, the district capital and supervised by the District Directorate of the Electoral Commission (EC).

An earlier appeal by the Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, to the assembly members to endorse the President's nominee for him to facilitate the rapid development of the area could not save him from the outright rejection by the assembly members.

The regional minister, who was disappointed by the turn of events, urged the assembly members to do away with their entrenched positions for the sake of the development of  the district.

Mr Zakaria, who said he had accepted the verdict in good faith, advised his supporters to also accept the outcome and not go about to foment trouble.
