Judgement Day beckons Banku, Powers

Ahead of the much awaited grudge bout, dubbed “Judgement Night” on April 18, the war of words between Braimah Kamoko, alias “Bukom Banku” and Ayitey Powers, alias “Ataa Kaa”,  yesterday took a dramatic twist with Banku pleading with the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) to ban him for three years if he failed to knock out Powers by round seven.

At the launch of the bout at the D.G. Hathiramani Sports Hall of the Accra Stadium, the confident Banku made it clear that Powers would be no match for him.

Banku, who was the first to arrive at the venue, was carried shoulder high into the hall by his fans, while Powers arrived with less ceremony in the company of his manager, Kwame Asomaning, and a few vociferous fans.

“I will knock Powers down in the first round and end him in round seven, otherwise the GBA should ban me for three years”, Powers said.

Powers was more solemn and said with God’s grace he was destined to win the April 18 bout.

“Bukom Banku didn’t call for this fight, I did and with my training regimen, I will surely win this fight,” Powers said.

Alex Ntiamoah, Chief Executive Officer of Box Office Sports Promotions, promoters of the bout, described it as a dream come true for Ghanaian boxing, saying it will showcase the fighters to the world, while GBA president, Peter Zwennes, was hopeful that the fight would break all existing fight attendance records in the country.

“This fight has generated a lot of publicity and I’m hopeful that it will break the attendance record of 130,000 that was set between David Kotei “Poison” and Danny Lopez in  November 6, 1976 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The General Manager of Multichoice Ghana Limited, Cecil Sunkwa-Mills, also disclosed that the fight would be telecast to over one million Ghanaian audience and 2.9 million fans across Africa.
