WAFA beat Bechem to finish sixth in Premier League

Sogakope-based WAFA yesterday pipped Bechem United 1-0 in their play-off to determine who finished sixth and seventh on the final league table of this season's Ghana Premier League.

A 75th minute strike from one of their fringe players,  Gideon Akunor, from a freekick, settled the tie in Cape Coast between the two sides who both finished with the same points, and even tied on the head-to-head pointers.

The two sides reluctantly showed up for the game as they complained that their teams had taken a break at the end of the season and had requested for a rescheduling.

However, the Premier League Board (PLB) declined the request, compelling the teams to show up at half strength.

Sam Arday, the technical director of WAFA, commended the team for their performance, especially, the technical and management team who had to hurriedly put a team together.

"It was a tricky match we played, given that the we had to rely on the fringe players as the key players had all been given a break.

"The team have done well by finishing sixth. It falls short of our targeted Top Four, but it's still a respectable end to an eventful season for us," Coach Arday told the Graphic Sports yesterday.
