he Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has inaugurated the 11-member Governing Board of the Ghana Sports Fund, formally activating a long-awaited institutional framework designed to provide structured, predictable and accountable financing for sports development in the country.

The inauguration ceremony, held at the ministry in Accra yesterday, marked the operational take-off of the Fund, which was established under Act 1159 following Parliament’s passage of the Ghana Sports Fund Bill in December 2025.

The Fund is mandated to mobilise and manage resources transparently to support athlete welfare, grassroots development, sports infrastructure, capacity building and elite performance preparation.

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Dr David Kofi Mawuvi Wuaku as the Administrator of the Ghana Sports Fund, a newly established body designed to overhaul the financing of sports development in the country.

Dr Wuaku, a seasoned banking and finance professional with more than 30 years of experience, assumes leadership of an initiative widely seen as a potential game-changer in addressing the chronic underfunding that has plagued Ghana’s sports sector for decades.

The Vice-President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has called on leaders within the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to intensify efforts to safeguard athlete welfare, safety and comprehensive medical screening, insisting that no sportsman or woman should suffer unnecessarily because of the discipline they choose to pursue.

Addressing management and staff of the ministry and its allied agencies during a working visit, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stressed that athlete-centred policies must remain at the heart of sports development.

Holders of tickets for the 2026 FIFA World Cup can now access priority visa appointment slots for travel to the United States, although concerns remain over whether fans from all qualified countries will ultimately be granted entry.

The FIFA Prioritised Appointment Scheduling System, known as the FIFA Pass, officially went live on Tuesday, January 20.
