Doping & corruption report a ‘dark day’ for athletics

A "betrayal", a "destruction of public faith" and a "dark day" for athletics. Leading figures have responded to a World Anti-Doping Agency commission report, which has recommended Russia should be banned from competition.

British sports minister Tracey Crouch called the findings an "extraordinarily dark day for athletics". The report examines claims of doping, cover-ups, and extortion in Russian athletics, which also implicated the IAAF, the sport's world governing body.

The report also states the London 2012 Olympics were "sabotaged" by participation of Russian athletes under suspicion, while Dick Pound - head of the independent commission - described it as "state-sponsored doping".

TP Mazembe players celebrating their Champions League triumph

Lessons from TP Mazembe’s success story

May the Almighty God have mercy on us we visionless people who in our backsliding, take solace in other people's glory and pride. I look back with nostalgia the days when we spent our energy, wisdom and hard-earned money to secure independence for a people who were struggling under the enslavement of their Belgian colonial masters and were crying for a saviour from above.   You can't believe it, today the same people have had the effrontery to buy our talents and have used them to win the CAF champions league, while we languish far behind without the same ability to buy great footballers for the same football competition.

 Dr Mustapha Ahmed!

Come again, Dr Mustapha Ahmed!

For a moment, it appeared the Ministry of Youth and Sports was not going to participate in the two-day congress of the Ghana Football Association which ended yesterday at the Ghanaman Centre of Excellence at Prampram.

As was reported on the first day, there was no sign of any representative of the ministry showing up. Not even the ebullient Deputy Minister, the VOA himself (Vincent Oppong Asamoah), whose favourite subject appears to be the FA and its workings, could be sighted by the congressmen and women, fuelling the suspicion about the uncozy relationship between the Sports Ministry and the FA.

However, all that must have changed yesterday when the sector Minister, Dr Mustapha Ahmed, graced the function with an address that sounded too good to be true and which could hardly hide the grin on the face of the FA boss and his colleagues.
