4 New disabled sports in offing

Four new sports disciplines are to be introduced to broaden the scope of the Association of Disabled Sports(ADS) in Ghana.

They are table tennis, swimming, badminton, volleyball, as well as football for the blind.

Mr Ignatius Elletey, Secretary General of the ADS told the Graphic Sports, that his outfit had earmarked a number of training programmes and refresher courses for its technical staff as well as its athletes for them to be abreast of the current trends in disabled sports.

He said  a number of competitions and training for officials of wheelchair athletics, para-powerlifting and blind sports would be organised throughout the year to keep the athletes and officials busy.

Talent identification projects would also be held across the 10 regions of the country between this month and May to prepare the athletes for the much-anticipated national wheelchair athletics championship in Tunis to be followed by the paralympic winter games in USA.

Mr Elletey also disclosed that some friendly matches had been arranged for wheelchair basketball team with Togo and Nigeria, while the blind would also participate in the Africa and world goal ball championship during the latter part of the year.

The deaf, according to Mr Elletey, would not be left out as they would be engaged in a national football and athletics championship ahead of the world deaflympics.

He said two major competitons would also be held in Accra and Tamale by the middle of the year to select players from the northern and southern sectors of the country to beef up amputee football.
