Ahinful demands tactical reset against ruthless Germany

Former Black Stars striker, Augustine Ahinful, has called for an urgent tactical rethink and wants the senior national team to respond with a smarter, sharper game plan in tonight’s daunting friendly against Germany in Stuttgart, warning that Ghana risk another heavy defeat against a ruthless German side already in full stride ahead of the World Cup.

Ghana's humiliating 5-1 loss to Austria exposed glaring structural flaws in Otto Addo's team, whose disjointed midfield, passive defending and a lack of attacking intent allowed Austria to seize control after the break to turn a narrow half-time lead into a rout.

Tough test

Now, Coach Otto Addo and his charges face a far sterner examination against an in-form Germany side brimming with firepower and confidence.

The Germans arrive on a six-match winning streak, having thrashed Switzerland 4-0 in Basel, with Florian Wirtz pulling the strings with two goals and two assists, supported by a potent frontline featuring Kai Havertz, Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sané. Die Mannschaft have scored 20 goals in their last six outings — a statistic that underlines the scale of the threat.

For Ahinful, the lesson from the Austria clash is clear, as Ghana cannot afford to be reactive or timid against a well-drilled German side.

“We can lose a match, but we need to perform, and today we didn’t,” the former Borussia Dortmund forward said. “From the beginning, we were slow and didn’t come out of our shells. We allowed Austria to dominate, we were all over the place, and overall, we didn’t do well.

“We need to work harder. I hope they learn something and devise a strategy against Germany because if not, they can overrun this team, and it will not end well,” he said

Blueprint for survival

The retired player's warning is grounded in history and current reality. Germany’s high-tempo, positional play will ruthlessly exploit the same vulnerabilities Austria exposed: gaps between defence and midfield, poor transitional shape and a lack of compactness.

If Ghana are to compete, a shift in approach is non-negotiable.
