Best of Bukom: Bishop Promotions promises fireworks on August 23
Ghana’s boxing scene is set to witness a thrilling new chapter as Bishop Boxing Promotions makes its grand debut at the Bukom Boxing Arena on August 23, promising an action-packed night featuring some of the nation’s most exciting young talents.
Backed by American businessman and philanthropist, Dave Bishop, now known as Nana Ekow Amu I following his enstoolment as Development Chief of Nyanfeku Ekroful in the Central Region, the event is expected to deliver an unforgettable experience for boxing fans and shine a spotlight on some of Ghana’s brightest young prospects.
Now officially a Ghanaian citizen, Mr Bishop is determined to fuse his 47 years of experience in entertainment promotion with his passion for Ghanaian boxing and community development.
“I want this to be a great experience — not just a boxing show, but a statement,” Bishop told Graphic Sports. “We want to give fans and Ghana their money’s worth.
We’re not just here for the business; we’re here to help the communities.”
The upcoming event is not just about glitz and glamour; it is also a serious platform for emerging boxing stars to make their mark.
Headlining the packed fight card is national welterweight champion Sampson Segbedzi, who returns to the ring after a training stint in Canada to defend his title against hard-hitting challenger Habib Giwa.
In another blockbuster bout, rising star Joseph “Jaguar” Commey, who stunned the boxing world by winning the UBO Africa lightweight title on his pro debut, will challenge Victor Kuwornu for the national lightweight crown in just his third professional outing.
Also looking to bounce back is Bernard ‘Kenya’ Abbey, 21, who returns to the ring after suffering his first professional loss in Georgia earlier this year.
He faces Nigeria’s Sunday Adeleye, 26, who has clawed his way back into contention with six consecutive wins after a shaky start to his career.
The undercard is stacked with talent. Stephen Coffie meets Dwamena Kesse in a super featherweight clash, Clinton “The President” Nana Adjei squares off with Pierre Kinda Kouengoue in cruiserweight action, and Godson Amuzu takes on Issa Awal in a welterweight battle.
“This show is going to highlight some of the best fighters coming out of Bukom — a community whose name is practically synonymous with boxing,” Mr Bishop said.
“We’re bringing the finest talent together not only to entertain, but to give back to the community and would make a statement that Ghanaian boxing is ready for the world stage.”
