According to the Ghana Athletics Association President, Professor Francis Dodoo, the events will be held on a pristine tartan track to afford more local athletes with a better opportunity to qualify for either the African Athletics Championship in Durban, South Africa, or 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

Prof. Dodoo said the Fifth Open Championship would take place on June 4 while Circuit Finals, which takes place a week later would bring the local season to an end.

"On June 4 and June 11 we are planning two athletics competitions; the June 4 one will be the Fifth Open Championship and that's usually a smaller competition, the June 11 will be the Circuit Final, an invitational where the top eight athletes accumulated from the previous four Circuit Championships will be invited to Cape Coast for the finals," Prof. Dodoo told the Graphic Sports in an interview.

"The Secretary General of the GOC and I were at the Cape Coast Stadium on Saturday and its an amazing track. It's an amazing facility and I'm expecting some really fast times and good performances there.

I always expect  great qualifiers and I don't think Cape Coast will be any different from any other place. Our athletes are doing well and have competed well over the period of the last three or four months and hopefully things will fall into place and some of them especially the Ghana-based ones will qualify," he added.

Prof Dodoo was hopeful that more Ghanaian athletes would meet the Olympic qualifying standards at the African Athletics Championships in Durban.

"For me, what we need to keep our eyes on is the fact that we still have that huge qualifier that the African Championship presents. So hopefully June 4 and June 11 and if it still doesn't happen hopefully June 22 to June 26 in Durban we will get more athletes qualified," he explained.
