He said the book contained so much information that would be relevant for research and other academic purposes, and that the nation would be proud to see a book by a Ghanaian author on the shelves of these two international bodies.

Alhaji Jawula was speaking at the launch of the book, titled ‘Professionalism in Ghana Footbll: The myth, perception and reality’ at the British Council Hall in Accra last Wednesday.

The 407-page book chronicles the origins of football clubs and leagues in the country from 1903, as well as some prominent players during those days. It also traces the development of some clubs in the regions of Ghana and compares it to those of Germany.

Major Larson also took a trip down memory lane to look at the instutionalisation of football development from clubs to the national level, while other chapters considered the conceptual issues that bordered on governance of football in the country.

Other issues that the author dealt with are youth development of football in Africa, using Europe as an example, and concluding with contemporary issues and challenges regarding player transfers.

Dr Bella Bello Bitugu, the Director of Sports at the University of Ghana, who reviewed the book, praised the author for the work, saying it was a ‘historical analysis of real life experiences brewed in Ghana’s sports.’

During the auction, the GFA bought a copy for GH¢5,000, GHALCA bought it for GH¢2,000, Sam Jonah bought one for GH¢1,000, just as George Afriyie and Liberty Professionals.
