Brong Ahafo Regional Minister clears air on citing of sports complex
The Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Kwaku Asoma Cheremeh has debunked rumours that Sunyani, the regional capital has been sidelined in the award of a sports complex project planned for nearby Dormaa Ahenkro.
In an interview on Suncity Radio Monday morning, the Regional Minister explained that the Youth Development Centres being built across the country (including Dormaa Ahenkro) was an initiative of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Youth Employment Agency (NYEA).
He said the Dormaa project was a counselling and recreational centre for the youth in Brong Ahafo, with a 5,000 seater capacity and estimated at $1.8 million to be completed in nine months.
“Sunyani will have a Sports Stadium with 25,000 capacity at a higher cost, over a longer duration, so a lot of grounds work need to be done for the project to take off June, next year”, he disclosed.
Mr. Asoma Cheremeh refuted accusations he was not in favour of bringing the project to Sunyani but favoured Dormaa Ahenkro. “After all, Dormaa Ahenkro is also part of Brong Ahafo, but the truth is that the Sunyani sports complex project with 25,000 capacity is bigger than that of Dormaa and will definitely come to pass”, he assured.
He also denied claims that the Sunyani Traditional Council had refused to grant land for the project and explained that the Ministry was yet to sort out land issues for the project. Asoma Cheremeh therefore urged the people of Sunyani and Brong Ahafo in general, to exercise restraint while the government worked feverishly to give the municipality a befitting sports and recreational edifice.
