Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, who earned widespread praise for his performances at the World Cup, is set to join Chilean giants Colo Colo.
The 40-year-old arrived at the tournament without a club after his contract with Portuguese second-tier side Chaves expired.
However, he quickly became a sensation after starring in Cape Verde’s goalless draw against eventual champions Spain.
He has now found a new club, according to Colo Colo president Aníbal Mosa.
“Vozinha will be a Colo Colo player,” Mosa said.
“In the coming days he will travel to Chile, undergo the usual medical examinations and then be presented here at the Estadio Monumental.”
Mosa said Vozinha’s performances at the World Cup demonstrated that he deserved the move, while acknowledging that the signing also had significant marketing appeal for the club.
Colo Colo, based in the Chilean capital Santiago, currently sit top of Liga de Primera, Chile’s top division.
Although the transfer has yet to be finalised, the club has teased the signing on social media with an image showing Vozinha’s distinctive curly hair.
The experienced goalkeeper became a cult hero and attracted millions of new followers on social media after Cape Verde secured their first-ever World Cup point with their draw against Spain in the group stage.
Cape Verde, the second-smallest nation ever to reach the World Cup finals, came close to producing another major upset against Argentina in the last 32 before losing 3-2 after extra time to Lionel Messi and his team-mates. Argentina, who entered the tournament as holders, went on to reach another final.
Vozinha has previously played club football in Slovakia, Angola, Moldova, Cyprus and Portugal.
