Dekagbe wins silver at second Africa Zurkhaneh Sports Championship

Traditional wrestler, John Dekagbe, took silver at the just ended second Africa Zurkhaneh Sports and Koshti Palkivani championship in Adis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The one-week Africa ranking competition climaxed last Tuesday at the Ethiopian capital.

The young wrestler was Ghana’s only representative at one of the continent’s largest wrestling competitions which featured over 20 countries.

The 23-year-old final year student of Keta Business Secondary lost to his Nigerian opponent in the final of 78kg lightweight category to be adjudged the second best.

Dekagbe, the tall stoutly built athlete was escorted by the president of the Ghana Wrestling Association, Norbert Amefu, Vice, Dzaka Ameyi and trainer Joshua  Osabu Odonkor.

Dekagbe told the Graphic Sports in an interview soon after his arrival that he can only aim higher and the sky is his limit.

He promised to wrestle on in his young wrestling career life to become the best in Africa and beat the giants in Senegal, the home of Africa wrestling on the continent.

“I am bidding my time and very soon after a few fights i will become the continent’s number one”, he told the paper.

His trainer told the Graphic Sports his charge would start and intensive training after a brief rest for the next competition.

Mr Amefu was hopeful about the talents in traditional wrestling which abounds in the country.

He told this paper massive employment could be created among the teeming unemployed youth in the country if traditional wrestling is well harnessed in the country.
