Goldfields Damang PGA Championship tees off with 72 golfers

The 2025 edition of the prestigious Goldfields Damang PGA Championship has officially teed off in the Western Region, attracting 72 elite golfers from Ghana and six other African countries for four days of competitive action.

The tournament, hosted at the Damang Golf Club, features 45 regular players, 14 senior golfers and 13 lady professionals drawn from Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, South Africa and Zimbabwe. It marks one of the most competitive fields in the history of the event, underscoring its growing influence on the continental golfing calendar.

Peter Damuah, Captain of the Damang Golf Club, in his welcome address, applauded the organisers, officials and participants for their commitment to the game. He, however, expressed concern about the low participation of women and called for more female involvement in golf, describing it as a sport with great professional potential. “We need to encourage more women and girls to take part in golf because it can be a worthy profession,” he said.

Mr Steve Robins, Senior Technical Manager at Goldfields Damang, also extended a warm welcome to the golfers and wished them a successful tournament. He reaffirmed Goldfields Ghana’s commitment to promoting sports development as part of its broader corporate social responsibility agenda.

Vice President of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) of Ghana, Alhaji Ahmed Padori, described this year’s event as “special”, commending the participating golfers for their discipline and dedication to the sport. He expressed gratitude to Goldfields Ghana for once again serving as headline sponsor and for its continuous investment in both male and female golfers.

“This season marks our 50th anniversary, and we are proud of how far Ghanaian golf has come. I urge all the players to maintain discipline and enjoy this wonderful experience,” Padori said.

Course Manager, Reverend Akwasi Prempeh, lauded Goldfields Damang for its unwavering support and for maintaining the course to international standards. He noted that the club’s lush greens and excellent facilities have made it possible for Damang to host the PGA Championship for the eleventh consecutive time. “I cannot make predictions like in previous years because the lineup today is marvellous and anyone can win,” he remarked, adding that the overall winner will take home a GH¢60,000 cash prize.

Tournament Director, Mr Eric Henaku, expressed delight at the growing international participation, saying it enhances the level of competition and brings out the best in players. “The inclusion of golfers from other African countries enriches the tournament and makes it truly pan-African,” he noted.

The official tee-off was performed by Mr Sampson Arthur, Operations Manager of the Abosso Golf Club, who praised the tournament for promoting unity, sportsmanship, and community engagement. “This event offers a platform to celebrate shared values and strengthen community connections,” he said.

The championship, which continues through the weekend, is expected to deliver thrilling performances as Ghana’s finest golfers face off against some of Africa’s best talents for regional glory and professional pride.
