"It's unfortunate for Ghana," Says Kwesi Appiah after Sudan's victory

Head coach of the Sudan national team, James Kwesi Appiah has described his side’s 2-0 win over Ghana in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Benina, Libya, as unfortunate.

Under Appiah's leadership, Sudan earned four points from their two matches against Ghana, drawing 0-0 in Accra on Thursday before clinching the victory in the second game today.

On a day marking 18 months since civil war broke out in Sudan, Ahmed Hamed Mahmoud opened the scoring for the hosts shortly after the hour mark, followed by Mohamed Abdelrahman, who sealed the win for the Falcons of Jediane.

Appiah, who has managed the Black Stars during two separate stints, expressed sympathy for his former team after the match.

“It’s unfortunate for Ghana. They have a good team, but sadly only one of us can advance. I’m pleased we’ve been able to bring a smile to the faces of the Sudanese people,” he stated in the post-match press conference.

With this victory, Sudan now has seven points after four games, while Ghana remains in third place in Group F with just two points. Angola currently leads the group with nine points.
