Joseph Paintsil shines with brace and assist in LA Galaxy’s Leagues Cup victory
Ghana international Joseph Paintsil delivered a standout performance on Friday morning, leading LA Galaxy to a commanding 5–2 victory over Mexican side Club Tijuana in their opening fixture of the 2025 Leagues Cup.
The match, played at Dignity Health Sports Park in California, saw the Black Stars winger score twice and register an assist in a dazzling second-half display.
Paintsil, returning to peak form following injury setbacks, was named in the starting lineup and made an immediate impact.
Despite missing a first-half penalty, the 26-year-old bounced back with determination, orchestrating a second-half turnaround that firmly swung momentum in Galaxy’s favor.
The hosts opened the scoring in the 16th minute through Brazilian forward Matheus Nascimento, who converted from the spot after a handball in the box.
Club Tijuana responded five minutes later, with 16-year-old Gilberto Mora equalizing from the edge of the area. Galaxy reclaimed the lead just before halftime as Gabriel Pec slotted home a low finish to make it 2–1.
Tijuana again drew level shortly after the break, with Mora netting his second of the night in the 59th minute.
But Paintsil soon took control. In the 65th minute, he finished a well-worked move initiated by Nascimento to restore Galaxy’s lead.
He continued to torment the Tijuana defense, and in the 82nd minute, turned provider with a precise assist to German veteran Marco Reus for Galaxy’s fourth.
Paintsil capped off his brilliant night with a stoppage-time goal to seal the 5–2 win.
The brace was a significant milestone in his return to top form and underscored his importance not only to LA Galaxy but also to the Ghana national team ahead of upcoming international fixtures.
Since joining from Belgian side KRC Genk in early 2024, Paintsil has steadily impressed in Major League Soccer.
His latest performance brings his season tally to five goals across all competitions, including his first in the Leagues Cup.

LA Galaxy will next face Cruz Azul in their second group-stage match of the Leagues Cup.
