Ghana’s world title-chasing sensation, John “Expensive Boxer” Laryea, has received the blessings and backing of boxing legend Azumah Nelson as he intensifies preparations for his crucial WBA world title eliminator against Argentina’s Adrian Maximiliano Robledo in Buenos Aires on August 15.
Laryea, accompanied by his trainer Lawrence Carl Lokko and team, paid a courtesy call on the legendary Hall of Famer to seek his advice and encouragement before embarking on what is easily the biggest fight of his career.
The visit provided the former three-time world champion the opportunity to share his vast experience of fighting on foreign soil and competing for global championships.
Nelson urged the 24-year-old undefeated fighter to remain disciplined, patient and mentally strong when he steps into the ring in Argentina. The boxing icon also reminded Laryea that representing Ghana comes with responsibility.
“This is the opportunity every boxer dreams about. John has the talent, but talent alone will not win this fight. He must remain calm, stick to his game plan, listen to his corner and fight with confidence from the first bell to the last. If he stays focused and disciplined, he can return home victorious,” Nelson said.
“When you fight outside Ghana, you are carrying the hopes of the entire nation. Be courageous, respect your opponent but never fear him. Believe in your preparation, give everything you have, and let the world see the quality of Ghanaian boxing once again,” he advised.
Laryea, also a former national and WBO Africa titlist, thanked the former two-division world champion for his encouragement, describing the visit as a source of inspiration ahead of the biggest assignment of his unbeaten career.
The reigning IBF Continental Africa champion heads into the bout determined to extend his undefeated record and move one step closer to a shot at the WBA world title.
Victory over Robledo would represent the biggest triumph of Laryea’s career and strengthen Ghana’s hopes of producing another world boxing champion.
