The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has made significant changes to the Black Stars’ technical team following a thorough review of the team's performance during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON, after a disappointing qualifying campaign that saw the Black Stars fail to secure a win, has led to a reshuffling of the technical staff.

Winfried Anton Schäfer, the seasoned German manager who led Cameroon to victory in the 2002 AFCON, has been appointed as the Black Stars’ Technical Advisor.

Schäfer, who also assumes the role of Director of Football for the GFA, will work closely with Head Coach Otto Addo to help build a competitive and successful team.

With over 40 years of coaching experience, Schäfer has managed national teams such as Cameroon, Thailand, and Jamaica, as well as top European clubs including Borussia Mönchengladbach, Karlsruher SC, and VfB Stuttgart.

Also joining the technical team is Desmond Ofei, who has earned recognition for revitalizing Ghana’s U-20 side. The 2024 SWAG Coach of the Year and gold medal-winning coach at the African Games brings valuable analytical expertise and a fresh approach to the senior team.

Belgian sports psychologist Kris Perquy, with 17 years of experience, has been brought in to support the mental and psychological development of the team.

Perquy has a strong track record in football psychology, having worked with professional clubs and the Belgian Football Association.

Gregory De Grauwe, a UEFA License B coach and video analyst, will head the team’s video analysis unit. With experience at clubs like Sporting Lokeren and K. Beerschot VA, De Grauwe has a strong background in physical education and analysis.

The team’s backroom staff is further strengthened by two experienced equipment officers, Issah Amadou (formerly of Asante Kotoko) and Abdul Rahman Alhassan (formerly of Hearts of Oak), bringing a combined 53 years of experience to the Black Stars setup.
