Medeama coach targets title charge with revamped squad next season

Medeama SC head coach, Ibrahim Tanko, has set his sights on transforming the club into genuine title contenders next season, vowing to build a squad capable of going all the way in the Ghana Premier League.

The former Accra Lions coach, who took charge of the Tarkwa-based club midway through the season, says his mission has always been about stability and long-term success. 

Despite a mixed run in the just-ended campaign that saw Medeama finish eighth, Tanko believes the foundations are in place to mount a serious challenge for the Ghana Premier League crown, and he is ready to reshape his squad to make it happen.

“When I came in, the goal was to bring stability and success,” said the former Ghana international. “We missed out on the top four, and that’s disappointing. But we’re not coming back next season to chase the top four — we’re coming for the title.”

Tanko’s confidence comes with a dose of reality. Medeama’s final home match — their only defeat at the T&A Park all season — has served as a timely reminder that reinforcements are needed.  Described the loss as hugely disappointing,” and a clear “wake-up call” for what needs to change.

“There won’t be massive changes, but we need to reassess. Players who are surplus to requirements will either be offloaded or sent out on loan, so we can make space for the right additions.”

Top of his recruitment list is a commanding centre-back and a prolific striker — two positions Tanko believes are crucial if Medeama are to mount a serious title challenge.

“We have a good group of players, but we need to add more quality. A centre-back and a striker are definitely priorities,” he said. “The rest will come from the talented young players we already have at the club.”

The 47-year-old coach is determined to inject fresh belief and drive into the Medeama project. With targeted signings and a full pre-season under his belt, he believes the team will be in prime shape to compete with the very best in Ghanaian football.

“I’m here to build something strong and lasting,” he declared. “Next season is not just about improvement — it’s about going for the ultimate prize.”
