Polo: Bukom win Captain’s Cup

Bukom last Saturday staged an impressive perfomance to whitewash Nima 5-1 and lift the Captain’s Cup duel at the Accra Polo Club.

In the second match, Bukom again defeated Nima 6-4 to crown a night of disappointment for Nima’s teenage sensation, Kwabena Amo Dopoah-Dei.

The Low Handicap tournament, which had Team A nicknamed Nima and Team B Bukom, witnessed some of the top players in polo battling for honours and trophies.

Captain David Awuah-Darko of the Bukom team scored thrice, while hard-hitter Wassim added two more to seal victory for Bukom.

Nima captain, Bilal Malawi, scored a consolation for his side after a solo run which resulted in a penalty that he beautifully converted.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic later, 13-year-old Kwabena Dopoah-Dei, admitted having a bad day but was optimistic of putting up a better performance in subsequent matches.

He challenged the youth to take to polo because it is an interesting sport which one could learn a lot from relative to healthy living, calculation and education.

Mr Kwakye Dopoah-Dei, Captain of Accra Polo Club, told the Daily Graphic in an interview that the club would play some of the best international polo teams this season.

“Ghana will engage teams from Canada, Dubai, Uganda and Morocco this year,” he revealed, stressing the need for polo players to train very hard this year for the task ahead.

Ghana will play host to the Canadian polo team in an international friendly on March 8 and 9.
