Polo: Captain’s Cup Saturday

Teenage sensation, Kwabena Amo Dopoah-Dei, would be the focus of attention as selected players of the Accra Polo Club battle for honours in Saturday’s Polo tournament scheduled for the Accra Polo Club.

Dubbed “The Low-Handicap Polo tournament”, the competition will feature four players each in teams “A” and “B” and will see the 13-year-old Kwabena Amo, son of the captain of the Accra Polo Club and president of the Ghana Real Estate Developers Association (GREDA), Kwakye Dopoah-Dei, rubbing shoulders with some of the top players in the sport.

Team “A”,  which is also referred to as “Bukom”,  would be captained by Bilal Malawi and has Farouk Prempeh, Amanda Blair and Amo Dopoah-Dei among others as the players. Team “B”, nicknamed “Nima”, is captained by Yao Lee and assisted by players like Waseem Helwani, Mark Rose and Daniel Awuah-Darko.

Mr Dopoah-Dei told the Daily Graphic that the Accra Polo Club would play some of the best international polo teams this season.

“Ghana will engage the Canadian, Dubai, Ugandan and the Moroccan polo teams this year. It is very vital for polo players to train very hard this year for the task ahead,” he said.

Mr Dopoah-Dei said the Nana Awuah Darko Polo tournament would also be held this year while that of the youth, which is aimed at unearthing youthful talents, would become one of the major highlights of the year.
