POLO: Ghana face-off with South Africa at Underberg

Mr Kwakye Dopoah-Dei, the captain of the Accra Polo Club, will lead a six-man polo team to South Africa  next month for a three-day international friendly. The competition will commence from May 9 to 11 at the Underberg Polo Club and will be the first time Ghana engages South Africa away after losing at home to the South African team a few months ago.

The tournament would be a four-chukker duration match, but the South Africa Polo Association (SAPA) says it could stretch to five chukkers based on the availability of horses.

Ghana’s trip was at the invitation of SAPA with sponsorship from the South African Airways.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic, Michael Mahama, the chairman of the tournament committee, said the Ghanaian team would depart Accra on May 7 to enable them to acclimatise and try the ponies (horses) for use.

He said the nation’s regular polo trainers and physically strong players who are fit and have stamina would join Captain Dopoah-Dei to the tournament.
