Save NSA from collapse - Staff appeal to Minister

The Senior Staff Association (SSA) of the National Sports Authority (NSA) has sent an SOS to the sector minister, Isaac Asiamah, to as a matter of urgency institute measures to enable the NSA rise from the doldrums.

According to them, the numerous challenges bedevilling the authority have hindered the NSA from performing its responsibility in sports development, proper and adequate supervision of the various sporting associations or federations.

Paramount on the list of problems is the lack of funding for the NSA and, therefore, the usual non-availability of funds to run the authority and its affiliates across the country.

In an interview with the Graphic Sports in Accra yesterday, the chairman of the SSA, Kwadwo Kwarteng, bemoaned the exodus of internationally certified sports coaches employed by the authority to seek greener pastures elsewhere.

“Salary levels are nothing to write home about, employees are dissillusioned, some proceed on pre-mature retirements, we are under-staffed and the problem is only getting worse by the day”, he lamented.

Mr Kwarteng told this paper that part of the problem was the interference by the ministry and the parent body, forcing it to incur costs through its determination of contracts and projects of the authority without the authority’s involvement.

The Accra Stadium events announcer also noted that infrastructure had deteriorated, stadium metallic works fast corroded and the freezing of the accounts and assets of the authority compounded their predicament.

Buttressing his points, Charles Amofa, the General Secretary of the SSA, urged the minister to live up to his pledge of not interfering in government agencies and provide the wherewithal for the authority to function independently.

The two appealed to the minister to step his foot down and ensure the most important sport body in the country worked efficiently for the good of Ghana sports.
