‘Sports College needs a facelift now’

The chairman of Cecil Hunters FC, Alhaji Tanko Abu Seidu Barry, has charged the newly-appointed Minister of Youth and Sports, Nii Lantey Vanderpuije, to come to the aid of the National Sports College and save the facility from further deterioration.

Mr Barry whose club, Cecil Hunters FC, uses the pitch at the facility for their training sessions noted with displeasure the neglect of the Winneba-based College which he said had produced many national stars.

He said, “We are talking about the only educational institution dedicated to sports in the country and the authorities have sat back watching it deteriorate at such an alarming rate in terms of infrastructure and manpower.

“This is a national asset that has produced many coaches and footballers, both retired and present, including, Godwin Attram, Dan Quaye, Richard Kingson, Laryea Kingston, Samuel Inkoom and Abeiku Quansah.

“The Ministry of Youth and Sports must accept ultimate responsibility for the poor condition of the place, and I will appeal to the new minister, Nii Lantey, to devote his attention and his outfit’s resources to restore the place”.

Stressing on the poor state of the infrastructure at the college, Mr Barry equated the training pitch to an “elementary school pitch” which was not fit for the grooming of future national stars.

“The training pitch is so bad that you can equate it to an elementary school pitch. It needs an urgent attention because this is a facility that national teams have trained on before conquering the whole of Africa.
