Supabets proposes 35% payout to Kumasi winners

The proposal which takes effect Monday, is to settle the controversy surrounding the winning tickets once and for all while measures were put in place to ensure that any such problem even if anticipated did not generate such controversies again.

But the front of the about 50 youth, mostly employed who were alleged to have won various sums of money were divided when the Daily Graphic visited the premises of the Asafo office of the company.

A firm agreement was yet to be reached between the feuding parties but some of the winners, apparently frustrated, appeared to have bought into the proposal to receive the 35 per cent pay.

In a statement to set the record straight Monday, Supabets said since its establishment in the country in 2010, they have always been paying its customers their winnings and have operated within the rules and regulations of the gaming industry in Ghana without any problems whatsoever.

It said the odds that generated the disputed winnings and which has occasioned this problem were wrong odds.

Error

‘The errors that occurred are as a result of feeds and odds supplied by reputable, international companies that are used worldwide to obtain odds and gaming software.

‘It should also be noted that the different markets available for betting, some are exclusive to Supabets which other gaming establishments don’t offer,’ the statement said.

The statement said industry players, including Supabets, being aware that  such errors may occur have made arrangements in the form of notices to all prospective customers stating that in case of any such errors, the company will settle all the tickets with the correct odds and then the tickets will be paid out using the general market average.

It insisted that, that was what was done across all industry players and any customers that tried to take advantage of same was liable for cheating as prescribed by the gaming laws of Ghana.

‘It is worthy to note that all betting at Supabets branches are subject to Supabets rules and this is boldly captured on each ticket that is bought by a customer,’ the statement added.

Background

Last week stakers held officials of the company hostage for hours for failing to redeem their winning tickets after last Monday’s Israeli league matches.

The all-boys invasion brought activities at the VIP Station to a temporary halt before the Asokwa District police, which was investigating the incident came in to restore calm.

The stakers won in the matches between Hapoel Beer Sheva F/C versus Beitar Jerusalem F/C and the Hapoel Raanana versus Maccabi Tel Aviv.

The first match ended 2-0 in favour of Beer Sheva and the second ended 1-1.
