Swimming: Nubia sets national record at World Championships in Budapest

Nubia Adjei delivered a sensational performance at the ongoing World Aquatics Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary, by setting a new national record in the 100m backstroke.

The 21-year-old clocked an impressive time of 1:07.58 minutes in Heat 2 of the women’s competition last Tuesday, marking a personal best.

Although Adjei finished eighth overall in a fiercely contested field and missed out on qualification for the semi-finals, her remarkable achievement of improving on her previous times was a goal she had set for herself at the global event and a significant milestone.

Spain’s Carmen Weiler Sastre eventually claimed victory in the event.

Participating in her fourth World Championships, the UK-born and based university student remains undeterred as she looks ahead to the preliminary heats of the women’s 50m backstroke today.

"I'm really happy and confident about my next race," Adjei said in a telephone interview with the Daily Graphic from Budapest. "I know I've trained well and hard, so I just hope it can all translate into my 50m race.

The 50s are so quick, so everything has really got to be perfect to get it right. I just hope to better this record too, otherwise learn from it to know what I can do better."

Jackson misses semis spot

Meanwhile, Ghanaian swimming ace Abeiku Jackson also showcased his talent, recording a time of 23.84 seconds to finish joint fourth in the men’s 50m butterfly heats.

Jackson amassed 759 points in the World Aquatics rankings but fell short of making the semi-finals, with only the top 16 advancing.

The 24-year-old will return to action tomorrow (Friday), competing in Heat four of the men’s 100m butterfly event as he aims for a strong finish in the 17th World Championships.
