Three sports personalities honoured at National Awards ceremony in Accra
The National Honours and Awards ceremony held on December 30, 2024, in Accra saw three sports personalities recognised for their outstanding contributions to Ghanaian sports.
Among the honourees were Herbert Amponsah Mensah, President of Rugby Africa, who received the prestigious Order of the Volta – Member award, while Albert K. Frimpong, former President of Ghana Baseball and Softball, and Ayishetu Adam, a former African Games relay medalist, were awarded the Grand Medal.
Mr. Herbet Mensah, the sole sports personality to receive the Order of the Volta distinction, expressed deep gratitude in a heartfelt post on Facebook. “Kotoko, Football, May 9, Rugby, Sports in Ghana – An award for all. I was the recipient, but my heart and mind were with all who have been on this journey with me these past 25 years!” he wrote.
He also highlighted Ghana's progress in rugby under his leadership, including the establishment of a purpose-built Rugby Park and the successful hosting of the Rugby Africa Ladies 7s tournament, expanded to include 12 teams. “This award is for all stakeholders who have come on this journey and not just for me,” he added, dedicating the recognition to the broader sports community.
Albert K. Frimpong, known for his pioneering work in baseball, softball, and other sports initiatives, described the recognition as a humbling moment. “Initially, I thought it was a prank,” he recounted in an interview, reflecting on the moment he received the news. “For over three decades of working for my country, it feels very good to be recognised.”
Mr Frimpong highlighted his extensive contributions beyond baseball, including founding Skate Soccer for the physically challenged, co-founding Beach Soccer in Ghana, and serving as a board member of the Ghana Olympic Committee. “This recognition inspires us to do more. We will continue to push Ghana’s name higher and higher,” he pledged.
The awards serve as a testament to the invaluable contributions of these sports figures in uplifting Ghana's image on the global stage, fostering innovation, and inspiring future generations.
