According to the GWF President, financial support from Mr Vanderpuye and the ministry was very crucial to their qualification which was secured last week at the African Championships in Yaounde, Cameroun.

Last Tuesday, Mr Nunoo led a delegation of weightlifters and coaches to the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Accra, at which he praised the ministry for their financial support and motivation to the team before and during the qualification process.

"We are very glad that we have qualified. Our qualification will justify the support we have received from the ministry.

"Weightlifting is the future of Ghanaian sport and we hope to make an impact in Rio with your support," he said.

Mr Vanderpuye, a former president of the GWF, said he was glad that his efforts during his tenure at the federation and currently as the minister had come to fruition.

"I am very happy that this dream is coming to fruition and I feel so proud. This is a sport that Ghanaians are naturally built for and with the right technique we will compete with the best in the world.

“It is now the responsibility of the ministry to do whatever we can to motivate and prepare you for the Rio Olympics.”
