Elon Musk reveals more details about Starlink's direct to smartphone internet service

Elon Musk has unveiled additional information regarding Starlink Cellular, SpaceX’s initiative to provide direct-to-mobile phone internet services.

He announced that SpaceX will partner exclusively with T-Mobile during the first year of Starlink Cellular’s deployment exclusively in the United States.

Musk further explained that after the initial year, Starlink intends to collaborate with other mobile carriers, striving to establish partnerships with at least one provider in each country.

He tweeted: "Starlink direct to mobile phone Internet is exclusively with @Tmobile in the US for the first year, then other carriers thereafter.  We are starting off working with one carrier in each country, but ultimately hope to serve all carriers".

The long-term vision for SpaceX is to integrate Starlink Cellular with all available carriers globally.

The collaboration between T-Mobile and SpaceX’s Starlink satellites was first introduced in 2022 through a technology alliance named Coverage Above and Beyond.

The primary objective of this partnership is to eliminate dead zones and enhance mobile connectivity. Musk recently reiterated the goals of this alliance, emphasizing its commitment to improving emergency communication services.

SpaceX and T-Mobile are planning to launch Starlink Cellular by the fall of 2024 (late September). This rollout aims to expand mobile internet accessibility, particularly in underserved areas.

In June 2024, SpaceX submitted a waiver request to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), seeking permission for Starlink Cellular to operate beyond standard radio frequency parameters. The waiver application encountered opposition from T-Mobile’s competitors, AT&T and Verizon, who contested SpaceX’s request with the FCC.

The outcome of this regulatory process will determine the scope and speed at which Starlink Cellular can expand its services. Despite the challenges, Musk remains optimistic about the potential of Starlink Cellular to revolutionize mobile internet connectivity on a global scale.
