Dr Maxwell Opoku Afari appointed First Deputy Governor of BoG

Dr Maxwell Opoku Afari, a former Deputy Division Chief of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has been appointed as the First Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

His appointment took effect from Monday August 7, 2017, a statement issued by the bank said.

Dr Afari who was introduced to the staff the central bank on Monday took over from Milison Narh who retired last week.

Dr Maxwell Opoku Afari, had been at the IMF as Deputy Division Chief since September 2014.

He holds a doctorate from the University of Nottingham. Between December 2012 and August 2014, he served as a senior economist at the IMF working with the strategy, policy and review department.

He was at the IMF for over eight years.

Before joining the IMF, he served as the special assistant to Dr Paul Acquah as then governor of the Bank of Ghana from 2006 to 2009.

He also worked in several capacities at the bank including, head of special studies from 2005 to May 2006 and Senior Economist from 1996 to 2000.

He was also an adjunct Professor at Regent University from 2005 to 2009.
