This initiative, in collaboration with Ghanaian business development firm Fort Group, is set to promote sustainable cocoa farming and ethical chocolate production across the country.

The certification, developed by Friend of the Earth, a project of the World Sustainability Organization (WSO), guarantees that certified cocoa producers meet international standards in ecosystem protection, resource conservation, and social responsibility. Ghanaian chocolate producers will now have the opportunity to align with this globally recognized standard, enhancing the country's position in the cocoa and chocolate confectionery market.

Founded in 2016 by conservationist Paolo Bray, Friend of the Earth has already certified over 5,000 farms and 50,000 farmers globally, supporting more than €1.5 billion worth of sustainable agricultural production. With its presence in over 80 countries and 5,000 certified products, the certification is widely regarded as the foremost international scheme for sustainable agriculture.

The certification will enable Ghanaian chocolate brands to adopt practices that minimize environmental impact, ensure fair labor conditions, and support local communities. In turn, these brands will become more competitive in the global market, appealing to consumers who prioritize ethical and sustainable products.

With Ghana boasting over 10 world-class chocolate brands, the introduction of the Friend of the Earth certification is expected to bring long-term benefits to the environment, local communities, and farmers, supporting the continued growth of the nation's cocoa industry.

As the country recorded its highest-ever cocoa production of 1,047,000 metric tons during the 2020/2021 crop year, Ghana’s commitment to sustainable cocoa production is more crucial than ever, further securing its role as a key player in the global cocoa market.
