McDan Group and GPHA partner to develop Ada Port, boost marine transport
The McDan Group has signed a key partnership with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) to enhance marine transport and logistics in the country.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed in Tema, focuses on developing the “Electrochem Terminal Port of Ada,” a project aimed at improving Ghana’s cargo handling capabilities, particularly in the salt industry.
The collaboration is expected to bolster Ghana’s salt export capacity, positioning the country as a major player in the global salt market.
McDan Group, through its subsidiary ElectroChem Ghana Limited, currently holds Africa’s largest salt mining concession, producing 650,000 tonnes of salt annually, with plans to increase production to over 2 million tonnes.
This initiative is poised to significantly reduce Ghana’s reliance on salt imports while opening up new export opportunities.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Daniel McKorley, Executive Chairman of McDan Group, expressed his excitement about the project, describing it as a pivotal step for the country’s marine and logistics sectors.
“This agreement is a testament to our dedication to developing Ghana’s marine sector. By investing in infrastructure and human capital, we are improving not only logistics but also creating jobs and boosting the local economy,” he said.
The Electrochem Terminal will be built on a 30-year renewable lease that McDan Group secured from the Ghana Highway Authority at the ferry maintenance terminal site in Ada.
The terminal will be tailored to meet the rising global demand for salt and is expected to create substantial socio-economic benefits for the Ada community and the broader region.
Initial work on the project will involve detailed feasibility studies to assess its technical, economic, and environmental viability. Planned developments include building quay walls, storage facilities, and improved road access, linking Ada to major highways for easier salt transportation.
A Joint Project Development Team will also be established to oversee the project’s progress, ensure stakeholder engagement, and solidify further service agreements between McDan and GPHA.
Once completed, the Electrochem Terminal will be equipped with modern bulk salt handling and processing facilities, as well as residential amenities, further fostering sustainable development in the area.
This partnership marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s efforts to enhance its marine infrastructure and logistics, with potential long-term benefits for trade and employment.
