Mining giant AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine is rolling out a series of hands-on training programmes for indigenes in the area, with a particular focus on improving the livelihoods of women.
As part of these initiatives, the mining company has handed over a modern soap factory to the community of Dokyiwa in the Obuasi Municipality to provide practical experience for beneficiaries.
The fully equipped facility forms part of the Obuasi Mine’s efforts to support local communities and foster economic development, a key objective of its 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan.
Valued at GH₵1.8 million, including construction and furnishing, the soap factory is designed to produce high-quality detergents, dishwashing liquids, shower gels, bar soaps, and other hygiene products.
Now fully owned by the Dokyiwa community, the factory will be managed by the Dokyiwa Peace Women Cooperative Group. The women, who have undergone both basic and intermediate levels of practical soap-making training facilitated by AngloGold Ashanti, are expected to spearhead production.
The Community Relations Manager of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, Mr Edmund Oduro Agyei, said the initiative is intended to empower women entrepreneurs, acknowledging the critical role they play in community development and prosperity.
He stressed the importance of the factory in promoting the economic independence of women and expressed confidence that the training and support provided would ensure a successful start to the venture.
“Buying soap from here means we are committed to supporting local businesses to thrive. With this, we will all contribute to generating sustainable income, creating meaningful employment opportunities, and fostering a self-sustaining community enterprise that benefits all,” Mr Agyei stated.
The Municipal Chief Executive of the Obuasi Municipal Assembly, Madam Faustilove Appiah Kanin, commended AngloGold Ashanti for its continued efforts in empowering the youth and promoting sustainable development.
She urged community leaders and residents to embrace the opportunity presented by the factory by taking their skills training seriously and ensuring proper maintenance of the facility to guarantee its longevity.
Nana Kwaku Ponko III, Kunkahene, also praised AngloGold Ashanti for establishing the factory and appealed for further support to address other developmental needs of the Dokyiwa community.
