(ii) Geological Engineering;          (vii) Electrical & Electronic Engineering;

(iii) Mining Engineering;                (viii) Computer Science & Engineering;

(iv) Minerals Engineering;            (ix) Environmental & Safety Engineering;

(v) Petroleum Engineering           (x) Mathematics; and

As a specialised institution that trains engineers, UMaT’s programmes are designed such that a balance is achieved between theory and practical exercises both in the laboratories and in the field. This balance is to enable our graduates get the requisite hands-on skills to prepare them adequately to be problem solvers when they enter the world of work. Field trips to mining, petroleum, technology and allied industries, as well as internships during vacations are therefore important components of all programmes in the University.

The philosophy embedded in our vision and epitomised in our core values of knowledge, truth and excellence places emphasis on quality rather than quantity. UMaT has the following distinguishing features:

(i) The best Student Teacher Ratio (STR) in science and engineering among public universities in Ghana.

(ii) A very strong quality assurance system.

(iii) Practically oriented programmes.

(iv) Very competitive school fees and payment schedule.

(v) Serene and disciplined academic environment conducive for studies.

Quality programmes

The quality of our programmes of study continues to improve year-in year-out, thereby making our graduates very competitive. This gives them distinctive edge over their peers pursuing similar programmes of study in other institutions of higher learning.

It is no wonder that the Deputy Minister of Education in charge of Tertiary Education, Hon. Samuel O. Ablakwa recently said:

“The National Accreditation Board (NAB) and National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) have also asked me to confirm that indeed the University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa, is the most compliant with the standards and norms of the NAB and NCTE. The two regulatory bodies are extremely impressed by the high standards here and the fact that the University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa remains Africa’s only niche University for Mines and Technology”.

Achievements

During the 2015/16 academic year, some of the achievements of the University were:

• (i) UMaT was adjudged the best oil and gas tertiary institution at the 2nd Oil and Gas Ghana Awards in December 2015.

• (ii) UMaT students won the National Petro Bowl Quiz competition organised by the Society of Petroleum Engineers in February 2016.

(iii) In June 2016, UMaT was given an award by the European Society of Quality Research for Best Practices in Quality Management.

(iv) In June 2016, the maiden edition of the Falling Walls
Lab Ghana competition was organised by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in Accra. A UMaT student won the competition and two other students of UMaT placed 3rd and 5th.
