Akyerekyerefo

Let’s tackle domestic violence

When they hit the music scene in 2012 with their debut song, I No Dey Mind, their motive at the time was to bring positive change to the society through their compositions and two years down the lane, it seems hiplife duo, Akyerekyerefo, are still at it.

They have released a song, Victims, which highlights the need for people to shun domestic violence and calls on the society and stakeholders to assist victims of domestic violence.

According to the duo who are trained teachers, they were inspired to lead a campaign against domestic violence because of the experiences of some of their students.

They told Showbiz in an interview on Tuesday that, many victims of domestic violence who are mostly children, have had to endure the psychological trauma they go through silently.

“We live in a society where the rights of children have always been trampled upon. Our cultural setting has relegated children and women to the background.

“ This is not a campaign to fight for equal rights for children or women, it is just to highlight the plight of domestic violence victims,” Okyerekyereni Makorni, a member of the duo said.

Makorni who spoke on behalf of the group said the recorded cases of domestic violence at the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Union (DOVVSU) and as reported in the media daily is evidence that the issue has been treated with contempt for years in Ghana.

“We think that we have the platform to preach about the bad and good in the society”.

Throwing more light on their project dubbed, Stop Domestic Violence, he said the ultimate aim is to sensitise the society on the harmful effects of domestic violence and gender discrimination.

It is expected that proceeds from the sale of Victims will be used to support the Domestic Violence fund of the Gender Ministry.

Under the management of Bakus Entertainment, Akyerekyerefo is made up of Okyerekyereni Makorni (Richard Nartey) and Okyerekyereni Sparkles (Ranford Saltson).

They are hopeful the project will help educate people on the need to shun domestic violence.
