Organised by the National Commission on Culture, in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service, the National Theatre and Roverman Productions, the three-day event was meant to promote healthy competition among the students as they showcased various aspects of Ghana through drama.

Held on the theme of  “Drama: A Growth Pole for National Development,” the competition  was also to select a school drama group which would have the privilege of performing its winning play on a bill with Roverman Productions.

Other participating schools were Wa SHS, Ahantaman SHS, Sunyani SHS, Mawuko Girls SHS, Preset Pacesetters SHS, Krobo Girls SHS, Ghana Secondary School, Bolgatanga Girls SHS  and Osei Tutu SHS.

The play, “Quest For Freedom”, tells the story of Seyram, a teenage girl who falls victim to a tradition that forced a child to pay for the sins of a parent. She helplessly ends up in a trokosi shrine of a traditional priest.

Sunyani SHS came second with their play titled ‘Sonia.’ It depicted an old man who narrated the story of his youthful days to his granddaughter, and how he allowed his stay in America to affect his cultural make-up and principles.

For the third position, Krobo Girls SHS staged ‘Galamsey’, a play set in Mpontu, a small village where concerned women fought to repatriate foreign nationals who engaged in illegal small-scale mining while some natives were rather determined to carry on with galamsey activities.

In his address, the Chief Director of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Nana Bright Oduro-Kwarteng, advised the students to endeavour to know the culture, traditions and customs of the country in order to become better persons in future.

The Director of Finance and Administration at the National Commission of Culture, Mr Michael Attipoe, also lauded the organisers for rekindling the flame of drama that lit the homes of many Ghanaians in the late 1970s.

He said the commission was poised to make theatre an effective part of the learning process for students.
