SheShe Slam 2023 set to thrill
It’s all set for the all-women slam in search of the lyrical queen of Ghana and the battle will unfold on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at the Silverbird Cinemas, Accra Mall.
Fifteen acts will exhibit how charming they are with words at the Ehalakasa-organised SheShe Slam which will be held in commemoration of this year’s International Women’s Day. Theme for the contest is: Amplifying the Feminine Voice in a Male-Dominated Art World.

The SheShe Slam was first held in 2022 and Briana Buckman emerged champion. The 2023 finalists are Keren, Maame Afua, Ansong, InCoreRect , Angela Hlordzi, Esi Bella, Sandra Bonsu, Malgu, Nassam, She Northerner, Nura, AJ Lite , Fidel, Ella Nessa and Tizamah.
“At Ehalakasa we discover, nurture, develop and empower young people in the areas of creative writing, reading and performance arts, through event production and workshops,” says Sir Black, a key voice in the Ehalakasa movement.
“The SheShe Slam has evolved as a response to the desire by artists and art lovers for the awakening and recognition of female spoken word performers on the verbal art scene in Accra and beyond.”

Special guest at the SheShe Slam which kicks off at 7.30pm, is spoken word performer and singer, Poetra Asantewa. An ‘alumnus’ of the Ehalakasa movement, she was described in an international journal as “a performer who combines smooth-like-butter neo-soul beats, lyricism informed by pointed social critique, and heartfelt vocalisation to deliver spoken word pieces that speak to circumstances of topics like migration, mental health and self-acceptance.”
Generally regarded as a brilliant, creative powerhouse, Poetra’s presence at the SheShe Slam is expected to encourage the 15 finalists to further develop their skills and hit the international limelight like she has done.
According to Sir Black of Ehalakasa, many in the arts community in Accra and surrounding areas are looking forward to a night of thrilling performances from the finalists who are keen to show off their splendid spoken work skills.
