When Safori’s art went ‘clubbing’ at Django Bar

It was an experiment last Thursday, May 5 to help stir up appreciation among people who would normally not attend an art exhibition and the smiles on the faces of the  brains behind the project indicated it had gone well.

When patrons of the Django Bar at Rockstone’s Office in Accra arrived for the usual club night of dancing to contemporary music and general socialisation, they encountered 25 mounted works by Ghanaian artist, Yaw Safori.

It was a surprising setup  but curiosity  got the better part of them as they calmly walked around and scrutinised the works on offer with live kora music from Ben Telfer in the background.

That novel way of taking art directly to non-regular ‘consumers’ was the idea of Zilla Limann  and Reggie Rockstone  of Rockstone’s Office, in partnership with Deborah Ahenkorah’s Fifty Four Faces outfit.

They had noticed the trend of  most art exhibitions in the nation’s capital being attended by virtually the same set of people.

They, therefore, thought out a way to get art directly to people in the places they frequent and last week’s show was the first in what they plan to be a monthly art display at the Django Bar on the theme: ‘One Artist. One Day. One Party.’

“Everyone who came to the bar on the night spent a bit of time looking at the art  on show.  The general feedback was that people loved what they saw and are looking forward to the June edition,” said Ms Ahenkorah

The artist for May, Yaw Safori, lived and worked in the United States for over 20 years. He relocated back home a few years ago and has a gallery at Oyarifa in the Ga East Municipal District.

He said he was glad to be part of a plan to get more people to admire and buy art.

“I believe that as time goes on, more and more people would not only appreciate but also buy art so that the young artists coming  up  can also make  some decent living,” Safori said.

The work of sculptor, Massimo will be on show for the June event.
