Tourism Minister Egyapa Mercer loses Sekondi seat
Tourism Minister and incumbent Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer, has suffered a shocking defeat in a closely contested election.
According to provisional results, Mercer lost his seat to Blay Nyameke Armah of the National Democratic Congress.
From the provisional results, Egyapa Mercer, representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), had 11,084 votes, representing 42.94% of the total valid votes, while Blay Nyameke Armah secured 14,558 votes, corresponding to 56.40%.
Out of the 25,813 votes cast, 171 ballots were rejected. The NDC first occupied that seat in 1996 with the late Albert Bosomtwi Sam.
Egyapa Mercer had a strong track record in the Sekondi constituency, winning the 2016 and 2020 elections after taking over from Papa Owusu Ankomah, who had decided not to run again.
