22 teachers honoured in Krowor Municipality

‎The Krowor Municipal Education Directorate has held its maiden Krowor Teacher Prize, a ceremony designed to honour outstanding educators across public and private schools within the municipality.

A total of 22 teachers were awarded across eight categories, including kindergarten, primary, junior high school, senior high school, headteachers, private schools, and special awards for non-teaching staff at a ceremony held on Thursday, November 27, 2025.

The scheme assessed nominees based on teaching excellence, leadership in educational initiatives, classroom effectiveness, and impact on learner achievement.

Motivation

Speaking on the theme," a motivated teacher: teaching with purpose, leading with passion.”, a former Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Charles Aheto-Tsegah urged teachers to serve as role models, inspire peers and learners, and restore the respect the profession deserves.

“A motivated teacher is more than a professional—they are prophets of possibility, leaders of hope, and servants of truth. Teaching with purpose ensures every lesson matters; leading with passion ensures every learner feels valued,” he said

Mr Aheto-Tsegah said while all stakeholders share responsibility for education, teachers were often unfairly blamed for poor student outcomes despite challenges such as inadequate textbooks, limited writing materials, and underutilised resource centres.

He highlighted the need for community understanding, cautioning that disruptive activities, such as using school playgrounds during class hours, undermine effective teaching.

Mr  Aheto-Tsegah stressed that motivated teachers needed proper resources and support, and warned that unfulfilled promises could dampen morale and urged all stakeholders to collaborate in strengthening education.

Quality Education

The Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, who is also the MP for Krowor, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey thanked all teachers for their service and reiterated her commitment to supporting quality education delivery in the municipality.

She emphasised that quality education at the basic level was just as crucial in helping learners progress to the tertiary education level and securing employment and noted that despite occasional challenges with academic results, stakeholders in the municipality have not relented in their efforts to support learners.

She donated three laptops to the winners and an amount of GH¢5,000 to the organisers to support the ceremony.

In his welcoming address, the Krowor Municipal Education Director, Azeriya G. Ayeriga, commended teachers for their dedication.

He said the education community in Krowor Municipality comprised 17 kindergartens, 18 primary schools, 14 junior high schools and one senior high school, supported by a workforce of 375 basic-level teachers and 120 senior high school teachers.

He further indicated that learner enrolment stood at over 8,000 at the basic level and more than 2,000 at the senior high level. The municipality also hosts over 120 private schools, he added

He expressed optimism that the award scheme would become an annual tradition aimed at promoting healthy competition and raising standards. “The Krowor Teacher Prize is a statement that excellence cannot go unnoticed,” he said.

Authority

The Paramount Chief of the Nungua Traditional Area and President of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, King Professor Odaifio Welentsi III, in a speech read on his behalf by Nii Borteyfio Bortekwei Afadi-Nsro I, Nungua Nkpor Mantse raised concern about what he described as growing behavioural challenges among pupils in basic schools, suggesting that the diminishing authority of teachers may be contributing to the trend.

He appealed to the Ghana Education Service to restore a reasonable level of authority to teachers and educators to enhance discipline and classroom management.

The Greater Accra Regional Director of Education, Hajia Katumi Atta Natogmah praised teachers’ hard work, patience, and sacrifices. She commended the award winners and urged continued dedication as well as support from stakeholders to motivate educators.
