The Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Professor John Nelson Buah, has called for stronger collaboration among the government, parents and educational institutions to ensure that the youth were trained responsibly to acquire quality education required for national development.

He said education must prepare students to lead meaningful lives, and not only for jobs, adding that education must aim at equipping individuals to acquire responsible and upright cultures from school to the workplace and through their personal life.

Prof. Buah was speaking at the 37th Speech and Prize-giving Day of the Edinaman Senior High School at Elmina on the theme: “Quality Senior High School Education, the Bedrock of a Successful Career Building.”

Quality education

He said though the ultimate responsibility of ensuring quality education at all levels was on the government, the community, parents, teachers and students all had critical roles to play to complement the efforts of the government.

He stated that success in life did not only depend on academic excellence but on a solid culture of self-discipline, and advised the students to make good use of opportunities made available to them to prepare to take responsible positions in the future.

Limited  facilities

The Headmaster of the school, Alhaji Issa Abass, said it was unfortunate that due to limited  facilities, the school was unable to admit more qualified students, indicating that out of the 86 teachers, only 11 of them were resident on campus, making supervision difficult.

He was, however, grateful to the Parent Teacher Association and the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) for the construction of a staff bungalow and a boys’ dormitory for the school, and to Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom, the 2012 presidential candidate of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), for tarring the roads leading to the school.

Alhaji Abass commended teachers and students for their efforts which helped the school to record a 98 per cent pass in last year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The Central Regional Minister, Mr Aquinas Quansah, commended the school for the success chalked up over the years, and pledged the government’s commitment to provide the needed infrastructure in all educational institutions.
