The first incident occurred last Saturday evening, while the second person was gunned down on Monday afternoon.

A 29-year-old network engineer, Naziru Alhassan, was shot several times by an unidentified assailant at his residence behind the Bagabaga Training College in the Sagnarigu District on the evening of Saturday, March 8, 2014.

He was later rushed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) where he died on Monday morning.

In the second incident, the body of a 26-year-old vulcaniser, Rashid Mustapha, was spotted in the Aboabo Forest on Monday afternoon after he had been shot by another unidentified assailant.

Their remains have been deposited at the morgue of the TTH, awaiting autopsy.

Security threat

On hearing of Naziru’s death, his mother, Alhassan Salamatu, collapsed and was rushed to the TTH where she was treated and discharged.

Residents of Sagnarigu described Naziru as an affable, gentle and hardworking person who took his job seriously.

“We are now living in fear because we do not know who will be the assailant’s next target, since he is currently at large,” Issah Seidu, a resident, stated.

He appealed to the security agencies not only to beef up their presence in the area but also to ensure that the perpetrators were apprehended and dealt with accordingly.

According to the Northern Regional Police Crime Officer, Alhaji Mahama Arhin, no arrest had been made yet in connection with the murder.

He explained that Naziru, who was riding a motorbike, arrived home about 8:30 p.m.

Unknown to Naziru, the assailant, who was hiding in the vicinity, shot the victim from behind and followed up into his room where he continued with the shooting on Naziru’s chest, ribs and legs.

The hooded assailant, who was wearing a smock, was trapped in the room but he forcibly opened the door and bolted with a friend on a motorbike.

At the time of filing this story, the Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) was in a meeting to deliberate on the latest security threat in the area.
